To ensure the best possible video quality, here are our pro tips for recording:

šŸ’” LIGHTING

Make sure all call guests have good lighting. This will help a ton in improving overall video quality.

  • Front-Lit Lighting: It is best when the light source is in front of your face. Sit in front of a window for natural light or place lamps or lights behind your camera in front of you.

  • Avoid Back-Lit Shots: Avoid having bright lights or windows behind you or any call participants.

  • Pay Attention to Low Light Errors: Roll automatically sends warnings for low lighting conditions. Pay attention to errors and record when Roll indicates a ā€œWell or Brightly Litā€ environment.

šŸŽ„ CAMERA

Make sure your iPhone/iPad camera is stable and your lenses are clean.

  • Stabilize your Device: Mount your device so you get a steady shot. You can do this with a tripod, mount, or selfie stick. If you donā€™t have these, try a hack with common household items.

  • Place your Device in Landscape: Put your phone in a horizontal position to capture in landscape view, the preferred camera angle for TV and YouTube productions. Make sure to turn off your phone orientation lock, if you find yourself looking sideways.

  • Place your Device at Eye Level: Frame yourself in the center of the shot, with your camera at eye level.

  • Clean your Camera Lenses: Any fingerprints or smudges will soften your video quality.

šŸŒŸ APP TIPS

  • Plug-In your Device: Your device should be charged or plugged in. When your battery is running low, the OS can slow down operations in order to optimize for longer battery life.

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb: Put your devices in ā€œdo not disturbā€ focus mode to avoid interruptions and distractions caused by incoming notifications. Disable any timers or alarms.

  • Keep Roll App Active/in Foreground During Recording: Do not put the Roll app in the background during an active recording. Backgrounding the app could create errors in your recording files.

  • ! IMPORTANT ! Keep Roll App Open During Upload: Once your recording completes, all files will automatically be uploaded to the cloud. Make sure all recorded call guests keep the Roll app open on their phones until their uploads are complete. The app only needs to be on in the background for the uploads to work. However, keeping the app in the foreground as the active app will make the upload progress faster.

You can check upload status by clicking the menu at the top right of the App home screen and selecting ā€œUpload Statusā€.
