The Roll Slate is a short clip recorded with your Roll video. It helps us capture a clean, empty background shot (also called a "plate") that’s required for applying visual effects (VFX) to your video.

🎯 A Slate is required to unlock advanced VFX like simulated camera movements and background enhancements.

🧭 How to Enter Slate Mode

You can enter Slate mode at any time during your session:

  • On the bottom toolbar of your active web call, select Slate

πŸ”’ Note: Only Hosts (the owner of the call) can trigger Slates.

🎬 How to Record a Slate (Step-by-Step)

  1. As the Host, select Slate from the bottom toolbar of your web call

  2. Ask all participants to step out of the camera view

  3. Stay out of frame for at least 3 seconds to capture a clean background

  4. Step back into view

  5. End the recording

That’s it! Your Slate will automatically attach to your session and enable VFX processing.

☁️ Automatic Uploads

Once you stop the recording:

  • All participant files will automatically upload to the cloud

  • The Roll app can remain in the background - no need to keep it open

  • Just don’t force quit the app while uploads are in progress
